A Black Belt
Article About Its Meaning In Martial Arts

A black in the dictionary is defined as, "a belt showing skill in martial arts; a belt worn by somebody who has reached the highest level of skill in a martial art such as judo or karate."  Yes, a black belt does show the ranking of one's skills, but for those who actually work to get it, it means so much more.

To me, my opinion on what a black meant varied as I grew older. At ten years old I was always saying how one day I would be a "karate person" and I would learn how to do all the cool flips and kicks. But, as time went on, and three years later I actually became involved in martial arts, the meaning changed. A black belt was like a symbol, a goal in life that I just had to have, but I had to work for it first. Like an ice cream Sunday you could say. I really, really wanted it, but I had to work my way through dinner first.

Despite everything, Tae Kwon Do came easy to me. It was like second nature to me and a great stress reliever during the week. Stances where no problem, I just remembered how my teachers or the older more experienced kids sis it and I was okay. Forms were a bit tougher, but they were fun to do and learn. I always tried to learn my form as quickly as I could so I could learn the next one.

Being a black belt isn't all just about kicking and punching though, it's also about your attitude and discipline. The one who helped me change these characteristics for the better was my teacher, he didn't just teach us about martial arts, he also taught us how to be good leaders and good followers, he taught us how to focus and be disciplined, but still be able to be crazy and enjoy life at the same time. Even when I was an advanced belt he still praised me on my techniques.

So while it might be true that a black belt is something that shows your skill level, it's also something so much more. I could wear a white belt and my classmates would still know I'm a black belt. It's because of what's in your heart that makes you a true black belt, not what's around your waist.
