All Martial Artists Should Work Towards High Credit Scores

High Credit Scores Possible For Martial Artists

I always believed that many of the skills we learn from martial arts training can be applied to other areas of our lives.  Such skills as working hard towards certain goals is one of them.  And if we apply such skills, getting high credit scores by not abusing our credit cards is certainly possible for all martial artists who are old enough to establish credit.

I wrote in another blog about staying on top of your credit report and now I was able to get my actual credit score from a colleague who has access to this type of information.  The credit report, which you can get once per year for free from both Equifax and TransUnion, does not show your credit score.  To get your credit score from one of the credit reporting agencies, you have to pay a nominal fee.

I didn’t bother to order my credit score because I kind of knew that it would be fairly high anyway, especially after seeing the R1s on my credit report.  But my friend was able to get it anyway and he revealed to me that my credit score is currently 805, which is considered very high.

A credit score of 680 and up is acceptable in the eyes of many financial institutions and above 700 is really good.  In my case, I think I was able to achieve my high rating because as outlined in my article about never paying credit card interest, I always pay my full balances each month and on time.

Rent To Own Programs

Unfortunately, many folks, even martial artists who are currently renters and want to become homeowners, cannot get approval for mortgages because their credit scores are too low.  Their past credit habits of spending too much on their credit cards and/or paying balances too late have caused their credit to become tarnished.

It’s time to take some of those valuable lessons we learned while training martial arts into the real world!

Some others, even with decent credit scores, do not have enough of a down payment to obtain a mortgage.  So such folks have been stuck as renters even if they want to become homeowners.

There are ingenius programs out there known as Rent To Own programs which help these kind of people out.  These programs in fact help people with poor credit and/or insufficient funds for mortgage down payments to become homeowners within a few years while renting a home that they will eventually purchase at a predetermined price.

Instead of going through financial institutions, private investors administer Rent To Own programs for homes.  You can likely find such a program near your area if this is something that would help you become a homeowner.

Since I’m now aligned with quite a few private real estate investors, I have also decided to develop a Rent To Own program as well in order to help out folks in Canada.  If this would be of interest to you or somebody you know who is currently a renter and would love to become a homeowner soon, check out my new Canadian Rent To Own Homes website.

Whatever your case might be, I hope that everyone out there in the martial arts world takes positive steps to become proud holders of high credit scores as I hope the articles linked in this blog post will help people achieve that.

New Spring Martial Arts Fitness Plan

spring fitness schedule martial arts plan

Spring Martial Arts Fitness Plan

Now that my ski season has finally ended with my trip to Quebec last week, I’m shifting into my spring martial arts fitness plan.  A fitness schedule can change with the seasons and if you recall my winter schedule, it was very ski intensive with a minimum of four days on the ski slopes.

At some points, I was on the snow for eleven days straight.  But now that there is no more skiing for the season, I will require a different schedule for fitness for the next few months until the summer program when my outdoor swimming pool will be opened.

I did some martial arts forms training indoors but not much weaponry over the winter.  Fortunately, I do remember all of my weapons forms as I went outside for my first training session with them this year.

So here is what my spring martial arts fitness plan will look like;

Monday – martial arts forms
Tuesday – martial arts weapons
Wednesday – weights & super stretch
Thursday – martial arts forms
Friday – martial arts weapons
Saturday – open activity (eg., rollerblading)
Sunday – weights & super stretch

As you can see, four days of the week will be martial arts with either my empty hand forms or weapons training.  I need to be outside for the weapons training because of the space requirements so if the weather is too wet one day, I’ll simply switch days to do my forms which I can do indoors.

The martial arts training represents my cardio exercise as well as flexibility elements of my workouts.  Of course, my two workouts with weights will form my strength training component.  So overall, there is still a nice fitness balance over the course of the week.

My Saturdays and Sundays might be switched around sometimes too if I end up with an opportunity to do some type of social fitness activitiy with others which could include rollerblading, cycling or hiking which are of course all weather dependent.

The above fitness activities are in addition to my daily, weather dependent, walks with my two Lhasa Apso dogs Chester and Roxie.  These walks normally take about 30 minutes.  So in total, we are looking at 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity at the minimum per day.

This spring martial arts fitness plan is basically like what I would do for my autumn schedule after the outdoor pool closes for the season.  I’ve already entered the respective fitness activities into my iCal calendar to remind me each day since I will likely need a reminder as I transition into my new schedule.

On another note, I’ll be coming out with a new Motivational WebTV episode soon with video footage from my trip to Quebec City last week.  If you missed the last episode, catch it at Persistence video.

Martial Arts Champion Plays Acoustic Guitar On Video

Martial Arts Personal Growth Success

For martial arts and personal growth success, we often have to learn new habits and/or skills.  In order to make such new skills stick so that we don’t give up on them, many experts claim that we have to put continuous efforts into them for 21 to 30 days at minimum.

This way, new skills or techniques we learn in martial arts or in any other field for that matter, will be absorbed into your system which is exactly what we want.  When habits or skills become absorbed into your system, they become second nature.

First Time Showing Acoustic Guitar

As an example, I will be showing for the very first time in my motivational video series Motivational WebTV, my acoustic guitar playing.  I used this as an example of new skills because when I play guitar, I often do not know verbally, what notes I’m playing.  However, my body does.

My fingers know where to go on the guitar and this is a result of playing songs and musical passages over and over again.  In other words, my body has absorbed the notes.

Make New Habits Second Nature

You can do this for almost any area you want to get good at for personal growth success.  We do this all the time in martial arts so we can do the same for other things as well.  Just work on them daily over time until they become second nature.  Be prepared to put in the continuous efforts required to make new habits and skills stick.

Here’s the new episode of Motivational WebTV featuring my acoustic guitar playing for your added entertainment.  Hope you like it.

Toronto Motivational Speaker In Martial Arts Videos

canadian motivational speaker martial arts video bo staff weapon

Toronto Motivational Speaker

Sometimes as a Toronto motivational speaker, I share personal stories of mine that involved GUIDANCE.  One story I share with my readers is about my first snow skiing experience with guidance.  However, since this is a martial arts blog, I will pull a story out from my martial arts background which is what most people equate me with as well as being a Toronto motivational speaker.

When I was with the Canadian National Karate Team, one of our coaches told me that my martial arts bo staff weapon routine had too many different techniques in it.   He thought that it looked too convoluted.

I didn’t really know what to think of this but when I went home to review video footage with his comments in mind, he was absolutely RIGHT!

I just couldn’t see this with my own eyes.  I needed a pair of external eyes to catch my flaws.  I was not able to do this on my own.

So I cut out a few of the weaker techniques and retained only the strongest ones.  The result was a much more competitive routine and I became a more consistent winner in competition.

This improvement was due to the direct GUIDANCE I had.  Like my previous snow skiing example, this martial arts story was yet another area where I had major success due to somebody helping me out.

In many of my talks as a Toronto motivational speaker, I stress the great importance of being with like minded people to help you with your goals.  This example clearly showed just how effective this is.

I probably would not have experienced these successes as fast or at their higher levels if I did not have any guidance or coaching.

Now for your entertainment, especially if you have never seen a full martial arts weapons form from me, here’s a martial arts video of my bo staff form from several years back.

My routine has since changed quite a bit to become even better (as a result of FURTHER COACHING no doubt) but I don’t have any recent martial arts video yet.  However, the one captured in this video is the routine I used for many years in competition.

Dogs Have Martial Arts Training Ethics

Dogs With Training Ethics

Most serious martial artists have great training ethics in a way that they are consistent with the training and do not complain during sessions.  Most are happy to workout and these ethics come from the discipline that we develop in martial arts.  In many way, dogs have such martial arts training ethic already built in themselves.

One thing I noticed is that most dogs actually like training whether it’s just obedience, agility, tricks or even the required drills I use to put my two dogs through during their potty training dog progressions.  They would never complain or resist going through their drills no matter what time of day it was or how many times I asked them to go through these.

Since one of the secrets to successful dog training is repetition, we drilled various skills in quite high numbers in terms of repetitions but they never complained.  Try doing this with humans, even us martial artists.

Dog Training Requires Discipline

Successful dog training requires discipline and probably more from the human’s point of view rather than from the dog’s.  It seems that the dogs will always be willing participants but that’s not always the case with their owners.  That’s why as dog owners, we have to put in the same type of training ethics in dog training as we do in martial arts.

Be Prepared To Train Hard With Dogs

If you are going to get a dog, be prepared to train hard, not just in terms of training the dog, but also yourself.  Learn as much as you can about general dog obedience and even take classes.  Then commit to working out with your new dog.  He or she will actually enjoy training with you since it’s quality time and bonding involved (as well as training treats).

To help you get started, there’s a free dog training video I shot with my own two dogs to cover the basics in dog obedience.  These are the minimum standards that all dogs and their owners should learn and training drills are fully demonstrated as well.

Inspirational Words For Martial Arts

inspirational words motivational quotes

Inspirational Words Posted

Here are the inspirational words I posted at my Motivation Facebook page during the final week of July.

“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. if I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it.  On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” ~ Dalai Lama

“Knowledge is a process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification.” ~ Martin Fischer

“Commit to quality: if we all give our best, we will all get the best.” ~ Janet Boulter

“Life’s real failure is when you do not realize how close you were to success when you gave up.” – Thomas Edison

“It is always your next move.” ~ Napoleon Hill

“If you want to make your dreams come true, the first thing you have to do is wake up.” ~ J.M. Power

“Anyone who dares to waste one hour of life has not yet discovered the value of life.” – Charles Darwin

“A man is but the product of his thoughts, what he thinks, he becomes.” ~ Gandhi

“What is the use of running when we are not on the right road?” – German Proverb

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” – Jim Rohn

The inspirational words above by Jim Rohn are so powerful.  It really defines those who are successful from others who are not with discipline as the key factor.  If you don’t have discipline to actively work on your goals, they will never be achieved.

Discipline of course is a major factor in martial arts.  It’s something that we learn to develop as a result of the training and it also helps us become better martial artists.  But the one thing to really understand is that this discipline can be applied to other areas of our lives as well, not only in martial arts.  In fact, it should be applied to other areas of life.

Inspirational Motivational Quotes Posted July

inspirational motivational quotes

Inspirational Motivational Quotes Posted

Here are the inspirational motivational quotes I posted at my Motivation Facebook page last week for July week 3 that are great for us martial artists.

“Every calling is great when greatly pursued.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” – Maria Robinson

“You will never find time for anything. If you want the time, you must make it.” ~ Charles Buxton

“Energy and persistence conquer all things.” – Benjamin Franklin

“I believe in human beings, and that all human beings should be respected as such, regardless of their color.” – Malcolm X

“No great deed is done by falterers who ask for certainty.” – T.S. Eliot

“If you want to be respected, you must respect yourself.” – Spanish Proverb

I really like the one above by Charles Buxton.  Many people complain that they don’t have the time to train or do this or do that.  However, they magically can always find the time to watch American Idol or have a few beers with friends.  So this quote suggests that if something is important enough, they you can always find the time for it.  You just have to make time whether it’s for martial arts training or anything else.  Here are the other inspirational motivational quotes I posted last week.

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Angelou

“Life is not a game of solitaire; people depend on one another.” ~ Jon M. Huntsman

“Life’s tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

“Once you learn to quit – it becomes a habit.” – Vincent Lombardi

“We have to learn to be our own best friends, because we fall easily into the trap of being our own worst enemies.” ~ Roderick Thorp

“To handle your self use your head, to handle others use your heart.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Out of the above inspirational motivational quotes, the one by Vince Lombardi really stood out for me.  It implies that we should never get use to quitting the important goals we have in life.  Otherwise, we get so use to easily quitting that we will never end up accomplishing anything important.  After all, you don’t advance in martial arts by quitting your training.  This should be the same with everything else you do in life.
