Back from Charlie Lee's World Series NASKA Karate Tournament

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

Back from Charlie Lee’s World Series karate tournament in Reston, Virginia which was the second event in the world NASKA circuit of this year. Once again, like the Compete Nationals in California in February, many black belt divisions including the senior divisions had only three judges per ring for both forms and sparring events. The center judge for the mens black belt 40 and up divisions commented that over the past five years, judges have received so much flack, particularly from competitors, that very few want to judge at tournaments anymore. This is really unfortunate as three judges for divisions, especially black belt divisions, are sub-optimal. It takes only one biased judge to create a drastic effect on the results of the competition.

Flyers promoting the Free Spirit Activewear line of Martial Arts T-shirts were once again available at the World Series tournament.

Results From First Martial Arts Competition of the Year

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

Clint Leung, owner of Free Spirit Activewear, came back from California after competing at the Compete Nationals karate tournament which is the first NASKA event of the year. He chose to compete with the bo staff rather than the 3 section staff he used most of last year. This decision was made just two weeks prior to the competition at the end of February. Although Leung felt that he did a pretty good bo form during the weapons division, he ended up 4th place. For the forms division, Leung did better. He tied with Kevin Thompson for first place which is the first time he came that close against Thompson. The judges then voted for the decision and Leung was edged out by a 2 to 1 decision. Leung therefore finished 2nd place which is not a bad start to the competition year.

Flyers for his karate clothing website were made available at the event as well.
