Mixed Martial Arts Fighters vs Point Karate Fighters

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

There were two very well anticipated special fights at the Battle of Atlanta evening show. Unfortunately, I was left the tournament before these fights but got news of the results. The fight between sport karate fighter Manny Reyes, Jr. against Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist Raphael Assuncao ended up in a judges decision for the mixed martial arts fighter. As for the bout between Joey Greenhalgh against Raphael’s brother Junior, Greenhalgh apparently knocked Assuncao out with a hook kick. Both of these fights used PKA style rules where there was no clinching allowed.

Battle of Atlanta Karate Tournament Newsletter

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

There’s definitely a lot of promo going on for Joe Corley’s Battle of Atlanta karate tournament coming up this weekend. They even have their own newsletter online and regular updates sent to people online. I’ve been to this event only once although it has been one of the long standing NASKA events having been run for over 30 years. This is an evening show that I probably would have liked to stay for but like most NASKA events this year, I am staying on for Friday night and leaving Saturday afternoon right after competing in order to save some costs since as any competitor on the NASKA circuit knows, it is such an expensive karate circuit to compete in. Anyway, to see more details of this coming event, see Battle of Atlanta.

Preparing for Battle of Atlanta Next Weekend

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

I’ve got one more week to prepare for the next NASKA karate tournament, the Battle of Atlanta which takes place next weekend. I thought that I would be ready for a new weapons form but it turns out that I won’t be. My bo form is still the strongest at the moment so I might as well continue with it in competition. I will still work my other weapons forms on the side until they are ready. If weather permits this coming week, I’ll also try to get them on video. I’ll keep my Chinese empty hand form too but I’m also prepared anytime to do a Japanese kata in case this one judge I know who hasn’t been too generous with my Chinese form ends up in my ring.

Sport Karate versus Mixed Martial Arts at Battle of Atlanta

Monday, July 17th, 2006

The Battle of Atlanta martial arts tournament at the end of this month will feature some interesting fights during the evening finals. Joey Greenhalgh and Manny Reyes, Jr., two top sport karate point fighters, will go up against Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialists Junior Assuncao and his brother Raphael. However, unlike typical MMA matches, there will be no clinching allowed for these special bouts. Although I’m scheduled to compete in my usual forms and weapons divisions, I won’t be around to watch these finals as I’ll be returning home during the Saturday afternoon.

Martial Arts Videos

Monday, July 10th, 2006

I’m currently scouting local locations in order to hopefully put some of my martial arts forms on video. Even though I use video often in training, I haven’t had any of my forms taped in a nice scenic location. Such videos would be part of my history that I could share with friends and relatives.

WAKO Age Limits for International Martial Arts Competition

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

WAKO is one of the top international organizations for sport martial arts. Too bad that they have an age limit of 45 for competitors. There is some talk about WAKO merging with WKA in the future but WKA does not restrict any senior competitors like WAKO does. I can understand why some tournaments no longer feature senior competitors during evening show since most audiences want to see the exciting younger competitors. But to prevent older competitors from even participating and representing their countries as WAKO does is just plain sad.

There should be no age limit for martial arts. Martial arts are for life as the martial arts t-shirt from Free Spirit Activewear says.

WOMAA World Martial Arts Games Event Cancelled

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

The WOMAA World Martial Arts Games in Costa Rica originally scheduled for August has just been cancelled. This is really too bad as on paper, I felt that they had the best divisions and I was really looking forward to going down there to compete. They claim that they will hold the event next year in Ireland or Scotland. I’ll have to cancel some flights I booked for the Costa Rica trip and my pre-registration fees will be returned to me.
