Both Karate and Kung Fu Forms Are Ready

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

I videotaped both my karate and kung fu forms yesterday and both are ready for the Ireland event. The WOMAA world martial arts championships in Ireland has separate divisions for Japanese karate as well as Chinese forms in my age division. I’ve never encountered such an accommodating event before for senior divisions so it was sort of an obligation for me to go. I hope to get both my forms on video online at some point for everyone’s entertainment.

I was also thinking about bring some Karate Queen t-shirts and perhaps some of the Martial Arts For Life ones too to sell there but I want to travel light since I’ll be in Ireland for an entire week. But these shirts will still continue to be available online at the Free Spirit Activewear website.

New Karate Bo Form Ready

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

My new karate bo form is ready and based on what I saw yesterday with video analysis, the form itself is okay and definitely an improved version of my previous form. Of course, the execution could still be improved especially with regards to speed and power at some points. But the techniques look pretty clean and I’m eager to perform it in Ireland at the world championships event there at the end of the month.

The old karate bo weapon form is still on video and I hope to shoot my new form shortly after I return from Ireland.

Final Preparations and Training for Ireland Martial Arts Event

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

I’m currently doing my final preparation and training for the WOMAA World Martial Arts Championships to be held in Ireland at the end of the month. I will be leaving for Ireland next week. I’ve modified both my forms and weapons forms since the Canadian Open in Gatineau last month where I didn’t do so well as I ended up with 3rd and 4th places. I didn’t deserve to win anyway since I haven’t been training much due to the heavy ski season. But now that I’ve committed to serious training over the last month, my forms have definitely improved. This shows that sometimes one must lose to get better. I’ll be doing my final video analysis of all my forms this weekend too which is a great training tool to use.

I’ll be reshooting both my martial arts weapons forms on video as soon as it gets warm and dry enough. My new forms will replace the current martial arts videos I have online.

Muslim Girls Kicked Out Of Tae Kwon Do Tournament For Refusing To Remove Hijab

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

Several Muslim girls who were competing in a Montreal area martial arts tae kwon do tournament this weekend were kicked out of the event when they refused to remove their hijabs. The referees told them that no headwear is allowed underneath their protective headgears for safety reasons. The girls were not allowed to compete and got their tournament competition fees refunded.

The girls’ coach said that they were allowed to compete in previous years with their hijabs worn underneath their headgears without any problems and they didn’t understand why the tournament organizers suddenly made a change in policy.

A few months ago, another young Muslim girl playing in a soccer game up near Ottawa was not allowed to continue playing after she refused to remove her hijab as well. Her teammates, consisting of non-Muslim girls, decided to pull out of the tournament in support of her.

The tae kwon do federation is going to discuss this issue further.

It’s good to know that the memory of Bruce Lee still lives on as I found a Bruce Lee calendar today online. It’s proof that his impact was so huge and long lasting. I’m pretty sure that there will be a similar calendar next year. Click on the link below for details of this year’s calendar.
