Will Modify Karate Bo Staff Form Over Winter

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

I will take the winter to modify my karate bo staff form. It’s amazing how long it takes for me to finally throw out moves that I’m not completely happy with. But I have current video footage of the present form and know which parts I want replaced. I also have ideas of what I may want to try out. So by spring, hopefully I’ll have a new karate bo form to boot and to shoot a new video with too.

No Time Management For Karate Training?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Do you find that it’s sometimes hard to get your karate training in since you run out of time with all the other things going on in your life? This does happen. Since many of us can certainly use more time for our day to day basis, here’s a new article on time management but with a bit of a twist. My Martial Arts Competition Finished For The Year

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Although I don’t compete as much as I use to, I still did WOMAA and WKA this year, both international events. Overall, it was a pretty good year for me given my own expectations. I did very well in WOMAA winning five gold medals for Team Canada again and taking the overall black belt weapons grand championship. For WKA, I could have done better since I didn’t qualify for any of the senior divisions but still got into the soft style forms event in Ontario. Then at the worlds, in a field of about 9-10 international competitors, I still managed to get a bronze medal despite the inclusion of young wushu competitors in the same division. So I was pretty satisfied with my overall performance for my martial arts competition in 2008.

Martial Arts and Emotional Intelligence

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

When I think about it, proper training in martial arts does have some impact on developing emotional intelligence. That is, martial arts training should have some part in teaching one to manage his or her own emotions. But then again, only if the martial arts training was proper. If the training is all about the sport aspect, as with let’s say mixed martial arts, then there is a chance that the martial arts training is not complete in terms of training one’s spirit. Here’s a good article on emotional intelligence and then you can decide for yourself about the role of martial arts.

As martial artists, we always strive to do better than before. When we are learning or trying to do certain martial arts techniques better, it’s a matter of expanding our comfort zones during our training.
