What Kind Of Dog Does A Karate Champion Have?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

It’s funny how when many folks out there found out that I’m a karate champion and a dog owner, they would automatically assume that I must have some big, ferocious dog named Spike or something.  Then when they realize that I actually have lhasa apsos, they think it just doesn’t seem to fit.  But don’t let the cute look and small stature of lhasa apsos fool you.  They aren’t nicknamed the little lion dog for nothing.  These little dogs think they are big dogs and sometimes act like them, even towards big dogs.

So for martial artists out there who are also dog lovers, I launched a new dog blog called Life With Dogs Blog.  Check it out and yes, those are my lhasa apso dogs at the top there.

Karate World Champion Quoted In Dog Article

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Here’s something really different.  It’s not everyday that a writer would quote a karate world champion in an article about pets.  Well, that’s exactly what happened.  I got quoted in an article about owning more than one dog at a time.  It’s a nice article about multiple dog ownership for any of you martial arts folks who happen to love dogs as much as I do.

Martial Arts New Year Resolutions

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Will you be making any New Year resolutions about your martial arts training or anything else in your life?  If not, is it because you failed in the past on keeping them?  Or if you do make them, do you still find that you usually don’t succeed with them or even forget about them over the next couple of months?

If these scenarios sound familiar, it’s because they are very common among most people when it comes to New Year’s resolutions.  Like most people, I’ve had successes and failures with New Year resolutions as well but I decided to study why sometimes I’ve succeeded and why sometimes I’ve failed.

I wrote an article that goes into this in more depth as I reveal two real life past experiences I had including one where I won my very first karate world championship practically with a broken leg.  See the article at Successful New Year Resolutions.

By the way, yes, I think it’s a good idea to make New Year resolutions for your martial arts goals as well as any other goals you may have in your life.  I’m planning mine this week.

Any Martial Artists On LinkedIn? I’m A LION

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

One of the groups of people I’m trying to include in my growing network are martial artists who are also professionals of some sort.  I’m on the LinkedIn network as a LION which means ‘open networker’.  I would be easy to connect with on LinkedIn.

It’s always nice to have things in common and since so much of my life involves martial arts, it’s always great to network with other martial artists around the world, particularly in the professional world.  So if there are any martial artists out there who are also on LinkedIn and would also like to increase connections, see my LinkedIn profile and feel free to connect!

Karate Champion Disappointed With Charlie Sheen

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

I’m a fan of Charlie Sheen.  I absolutely love his TV show Two and a Half Men.  There is always a barrel of laughs as it’s one of my current favs.  I also enjoyed the movies he’s been in.  However, when I read yesterday that he’s been arrested (again) for domestic violence while vacationing in Colorado with his third wife, I must say that I’m quite disappointed with Charlie Sheen.

As a Karate World Champion, I’m going to say that there is no place for violence outside of combat sports, certainly not against women.  This guy is 44 years old and should definitely know better.  He’s not some young kid anymore.  He’s a talented actor but he should most certainly check himself into some type of program and stay there until it’s certain that he won’t do this type of nonsense again.  I’m sure that all respectful martial artists out there agree.

Bruce Lee Used MMA To Beat Kareem Abdul Jabbar In Movie

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

In his final movie Game of Death, Bruce Lee had to fight the character played by basketball great, Kareem Adbul Jabbar.  In their fight scene, Lee had to use a mixture of martial arts techniques to beat Jabbar, who had a very significant height and reach advantage.  In the end, Bruce Lee used a grappling or wrestling style choke hold on Jabbar.  He was displaying early mixed martial arts or MMA on screen.  Bruce Lee would have found the evolution of MMA very interesting.

Bruce Lee As Father Of MMA Mixed Martial Arts

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Unknown to many people in the world, Bruce Lee is now considered by many in the martial arts world to be the father of the current mixed martial arts or MMA sports explosion.

Back in his days, Bruce Lee was really the first martial artist to advocate in the training of techniques from different martial arts and fighting styles rather than stick to a traditional martial art.  This was quite revolutionary in his time.  Now, history proves that Bruce Lee was in fact way ahead of his time when he developed his own style of martial art called Jeet Kune Do which is really his way of mixed martial arts.

Since he was going against establishment, Bruce Lee definitely had to go outside his box to develop the concept of mixed martial arts or MMA.  I have a full article which describes Bruce Lee as the father of MMA mixed martial arts.
