FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Karate World Champion Helps Muslim Students Bridge Cultural Gaps

Martial arts motivational speaker’s visit to Islamic school will be a victory for Greater Toronto Area diversity

Mississauga, Ontario, Canada – May 17, 2010 – There will be a very unique event at the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) High School in Mississauga, Ontario.  The ISNA’s private high school for Muslim students will have a special non-Muslim guest on Thursday June 3, 2010 as part of their Youth Leadership Day.  Past member of the Canadian National Karate team, Karate World Champion, author and motivational speaker Clint Cora will be making a rare visit to the school to present a special talk just for these students.  His appearance will be very significant since it will help bridge cultural gaps in the GTA (greater Toronto area).

Due to past incidents both abroad and even right here in the greater Toronto area, the Muslim community has unfortunately and wrongfully suffered a negative image in some of the Canadian public’s eyes.  As a consequence, the community including these young high school students sometimes feel it difficult to integrate with the rest of Canadian society.

Clint Cora, who is of Chinese-Canadian background, is in a position to help these students as he says, “One thing my community has in common with the Muslim community is that we are both visible minorities here.  However, us Chinese have been here in Canada for many more years and therefore we have a lot of experience as visible minorities that we can share to help others.”

Cora will be doing a special presentation customized just for the ISNA audience.   The students and staff will be getting a taste of the high energy talks that Clint Cora does on a regular basis at companies, conferences and other events.  His talks also include very entertaining martial arts weaponry to highlight key points for achieving success.

Cora praises the ISNA as he says, “This is a major step for the ISNA as they are making a huge effort to learn how to reach out to others.  I feel so honoured to be a part of this event.  It will be a real victory for diversity here in Ontario.”

Clint Cora’s presentation at ISNA located at 2200 South Sheridan Way (just west of Southdown) will start at about 9 am on June 3 and press members are invited to set up on site at 8:30 am.

Motivational Video Will Feature Karate Weapon Bo Staff

Friday, May 21st, 2010

#martialarts #karate #kungfu #taekwondo #mma #mixedmartialarts #ufc

I was scouting possible locations yesterday for my Motivational WebTV show which is an online motivational video series that I do every two weeks or so for my personal development website.  Since I have a segment in my live motivational talk which involves a karate weapon bo staff, I want to include it as part of a future episode of my online show.

Possible locations suitable are in a soccer field, by the beach at the lakefront and in the woods where I usually take my two lhasa apso dogs for walks.  I usually like to have some privacy when I shoot my motivational video shows and out of these three locations, the beach would actually give me the least privacy since there are always people walking around even during weekdays.

Capturing good sound is important and a location such as the lakefront where there could be waves and wind may be factors.  The soccer field is usually okay if I pick the right times of the day when nobody will be around.  But it looks like the deep in the woods might be actually the best location for this shoot.

I have shot previous episodes in all three locations before and the woods spot was actually the best in terms of privacy, sound and lighting.  The only other factor about the woods is that I need a spot where I have enough room to work my karate weapon bo staff without hitting any bushes or trees.  Of course, the other locations would not have this type of complication.

I’ll try to shoot this episode soon and in the near future, my viewers will be able to see my bo staff in action along with an associated motivational message to go along with it.

Should Martial Arts Be Practical?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Here is a new article I wrote for my Martial Arts Articles Online website about whether martial arts training should always be practical or not.  I was influenced to write this article after an online discussion with one of my Facebook friends on martial arts weaponry after posting a photo of me doing some bo staff moves with two audience members during one of my motivational speeches at a local Probus club.

He talked about the practicality of certain weapons like swords and staffs.  I thought about my own martial arts development where I started out with traditional martial arts, then went on to just practical training with no forms whatsoever.  Then after that, I went straight into mainly forms, especially open style or non-traditional forms in competition.  I enjoyed all aspects of this training and think each has its benefits.

My article argues that the practical only martial artists, especially those involved in MMA or mixed martial arts, need not discount the fancy techniques of martial arts just because they won’t work on the streets.  Take a look at the article at Martial Arts Training Should Not Just Be Practical.

Seniors Get Personal Growth With Martial Arts

Monday, May 10th, 2010

#martialarts #karate  —-  As part of my own speaker identity, all of my talks whether in motivational personal growth or in diversity, have some martial arts component to them.  The motivational talk I did for a Probus club last week was no different.  Probus is a network of community clubs where the vast majority of members are retired seniors.

One of the parts of my motivational talk utilizes the martial arts karate weapon bo staff.  At one point of the talk, I recruit one or two volunteers, usually women, to join me up onstage to do some moves with the bo staff.  I make sure that they have never, ever used a bo staff before.

In front of their colleagues and fellow Probus members, I had these two ladies up front with me and taught them some basic bo staff moves.  Everybody was thoroughly entertained as both the audience and these two ladies had fun.

More important is the lesson behind this activity during my motivational talk.  Since these two senior ladies have never used bo staffs in their lives before and I got them doing some basic moves in a few minutes, in front of their peers, a wonderful thing happened before their very eyes.

These two volunteers demonstrated that personal growth was indeed possible for any age group including the seniors.  This was an ‘ah-ha’ moment for the Probus audience for sure.

Martial Arts Sports Motivational Speakers

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

#motivational #sports #martialarts  – The other day, there was a speakers bureau that specialized in athletes from various sports as speakers for functions who was looking for more such individuals to fill up their roster. I thought about whether I would be in this particular niche category and concluded that I was since martial arts could certainly be considered as an athletic activity.

In many of the past speaking events, especially when people from the general public were welcome to attend, the organizers used my tagline of Karate World Champion prominently on their promotional materials for their events. This helped draw in people who normally wouldn’t come to such speaking events because the Karate World Champion title stirs curiosity. After all, it’s not everyday that you can get a sports motivational speaker, especially a Karate World Champion, to speak at your event.

A sports motivational speaker therefore has the ability to enhance your event. Athletes who have been successful in sports represent something unique in the public’s eyes. They are definitely a minority with some type of celebrity status, even if on the local level, in the general public. They are also folks who have gone through enormous hard work and dedication to excel in their chosen sports. Those athletes who have become successful in their sports represent some type of hope and inspiration for everyone else.

I have come to realize that there will always be a sports motivational speaker element in my own profile as a speaker so I might as well offer it as an advantage for event organizers. In fact, I have dedicated two separate webpages on my martial arts sports speaker background for those who are interested to know a bit more about that side of me.
