many forms and guises. Some forms of martial arts are truly artistic,
in that they seem more like dancing than fighting. Many of them are, in
fact, about as effective as dancing in a fight. This isn't West Side

A real mugger or rapist
isn't going to be snapping his fingers to some personal tune while he
is victimizing you. That person understands it's impractical--it would
get in the way of what he hopes to accomplish. You should think the
same way about any self defense course you take. If it looks like you
won't learn how to take the upper hand in a conflict within a matter of
days, you probably won't.

take this the wrong
way. Kung Fu, in
all its forms is a beautiful art. You have to
appreciate the athletic skill that it takes to succeed at it. However,
you're not going to learn how to dodge bullets any time soon. It's far
better to not have the gun pointed at you.

the more florid styles of
martial arts were practical, they would be implemented by various
military forces. What is the common denominator among military fighting
styles? Whether you're talking about the Green Berets, the Spetsnaz or
the IDF, there's one thing in common. You remove the threat as quickly
and efficiently as possible. Fancy moves could get you killed.
Practicality
is key
in selecting a self defense form. Not only that, but it should deliver
immediate results. After all, what good are those tae kwon do
classes going to do if you're mugged while still a white belt, or a
yellow belt? In fact, it's probably not going to help you if you have a
black belt.
Your self defense
course should teach the most effective ways of eliminating a threat and
be applicable immediately. Otherwise, you're wasting precious time.
