How To Find The Right Martial Arts School
For Your Children

The type of research involved when choosing a martial arts school for adults is also appropriate for children (see the How to Choose a Martial Arts School article). However, there are some additional considerations when it comes to martial arts and kids. As everyone is aware, kids can get bored easily so teaching martial arts to them requires a different approach compared to teaching adults. Many adults can tolerate a relatively serious martial arts environment that some schools have.

However, clubs that adopt a serious tone to training will certainly lose a good portion of their junior enrolment. Although martial arts can be one of the best discipline teachers available for children, kids need to have fun too. Kids also need frequent reachable goals in order to stay interested in certain activities. Do the instructors offer enough encouragement and incentives for the children to improve and advance? Otherwise, they will get bored and will soon be begging their parents to stop taking them to classes.

It is highly recommended to go with your child and watch some children’s (not adult) classes in action at prospective clubs. See if the kids are smiling and having fun. Some martial arts schools have perfected the methods of teaching children and have very successful junior programs in place. Other clubs have mostly harder core adult martial arts students and very few children. Ask how your child feels about certain places after witnessing some classes. Talk to other parents who already have kids enrolled. Of course, safety for your kids should be a big factor. Watching classes will reveal how safe the instructors run their sessions with children.

Sometimes it is more worthwhile to drive your children to a martial arts school located further away if it has a great program for kids even if it is more expensive than a studio closer to home that is geared more towards adults. You want martial arts to be a positive experience for your children, not a negative one. If you think that your child is not ready for a full commitment to a martial arts program but is willing to give it a try, maybe have them take a karate camp that might be available during the summer season to see if they like it.
