Tae Kwon Do and Karate
Martial Arts Overview

The two most widespread martial arts training are Karate and Tae Kwon do. Many people question what the different is between these two martial arts. This is the case for those who are interested in looking around for a martial arts training school. Most schools in both karate and Tae Kwon-Do wear the same type of white uniforms with a range of colour belts. Traditional karate began in Japan after some inspiration from Chinese martial arts.

There are diverse styles of karate but they are all generally considered as Japanese martial arts in the present day. The colour belt system was created to illustrate the various positions of karate practitioners with white depicting beginners and black belts representing instructor levels and higher.

There are also different coloured belts in Tae Kwon Do between white to black. Current Tae Kwon-Do was created in Korea after much inspiration from Japanese karate throughout the occupation by Japan. Tae Kwon Do has the same white uniforms along with a colour belt ranking system as Karate.

These days, there are two major techniques of Tae Kwon Do, the International Tae Kwon Do Federation and World Tae Kwon Do Federation. There are a number of Tae Kwon Do schools which have incorporated a black lining to their white uniforms for black belts and V-neck top is often seen in schools associated with the World Tae Kwon Do Federation.

It is said, Karate use 60% of their arms or hands for strikes or blocks and 40% on kicks. This is seen in the various structure or Katas of karate which are set pattern of simulated fights against imaginary opponents using different techniques. The structure from Tae Kwon Do would have the opposite percentage with 40% hands and 60% kicks. In Tae Kwon Do, there is also additional emphasis on high kicking to the head than in karate. Tae Kwon Do students also make use of more jumping or flying kicks and patterns are usually a bit shorter and less complicated than the Karate.
